history
The earliest beginnings go back to 2001 when Derek Barber began writing and recording songs in his home studio. Trained from childhood in classical piano and yet passionate about experimental music, Derek desired to create music that incorporated his classical training with this love for progressive and psychedelic music. Over several years from 2001 – 2005, Derek began recording various demos utilizing the latest home recording technology that was emerging and then distributing these demos amongst friends. It was during this period that Greylevel’s music style and sonic characteristics were developed and honed. Many of the songs that eventually ended up on Opus One were found in early form within the demos that were created during this time.
Eventually in late 2005, Derek was joined by Esther Barber and Richard Shukin and together the three of them recorded what became known as Opus One. This debut album was completed in 2006 and garnered the attention of ProgRock Records who shortly thereafter signed Greylevel and released Opus One internationally in January 2007.
After the release of Opus One, Greylevel was joined by Tyler and Davis and together the 5 of them began working on material that would ultimately become their next release. This sophomore release from Greylevel, entitled Hypostatic Union, was completed in demo form in early 2010.
Since then the band has been hard at work recording the album version of Hypostatic Union, which is due for international release through ProgRock Records in 2011.
